About Workshop Designs
Building Custom Furniture and Client Relationships Since 1989
Workshop Designs began in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1989 through the partnership of Nancy Owen and Bruce Wade. Nancy is a graduate of the University of Manitoba’s Interior Design Program with experience in both residential and commercial design. Bruce studied clothing and textile design at the University of Manitoba and also earned an Upholstery Certificate from Red River College. His design talents and entrepreneurial spirit formed Bruce’s Upholstery in 1982, a successful business that specialized in reupholstery of classic furniture pieces. When Nancy joined Bruce in business in 1989, they created Workshop Designs.
Their collective talent, passion and unique abilities results in the creation of well-tailored upholstered furniture for any décor - from casual to formal, modern to traditional. Nancy and Bruce enjoy collaborating with their residential and commercial clients to design and create furniture that is 100% Canadian-built.
As versatile designers, Nancy and Bruce can create pieces that are both stylish and functional. Whether your taste leans to contemporary, transitional or even traditional, Workshop Designs can create one-of-a-kind custom built furniture, designed for your lifestyle. As well, if you have a piece of good quality upholstered furniture that holds sentimental value or represents a specific design period, reupholstery is an option that would help you maintain the integrity of the piece, lasting for future generations.
Design & Collaboration
The process of creating made-to-order upholstered furniture is what we enjoy most. At Workshop Designs we engage our clients in the process of designing and building their furniture. We begin by working together to determine the desired dimensions and style details and select fabrics and materials. The process may also involve templating furniture on site, reviewing patterns prior to production and “sit tests” to choose foam and fills. This process is what helps us to ensure that the outcome will surpass your expectation, and it is this process that has helped us build long-term relationships with our clients who return time and again for our custom pieces.
We build your furniture in Canada
We start by building our hardwood furniture frames in our shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba using real Canadian frame stock. Each piece is upholstered on site in our shop. While fabrics and components may be globally sourced, we support local and Canadian dealers when purchasing many of our materials and supplies.
